Luca Dalzell has never eaten a full meal in his life.

The 3-year-old Palmerston North boy has a rare and recently categorised eating disorder known as avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

Doctors at Starship children's hospital told his mother, Annie Dalzell, Luca's case was at an "extreme level" when he was diagnosed at age two.

Children and adults who have the disorder tend to be uninterested in food and avoid it. It can vary case by case, with some people only eating crunchy food, pureed food, or food or a certain colour.
